Asides from the constant fear of death, which is a big part of being old, most elderlies live with many health issues that makes life really uneasy and can be unbearable to the majority of them. One of my grandparents passed a few years ago and I can tell you life wasn’t easy for him before passing. He eventually lost almost his entire sight before passing. The other grandparent couldn’t even move properly without someone aiding her. She gradually became a liability for herself and anyone around her, sorry to say.

With all that’s said above, I really don’t think I want to live that old to a point of being under total care of another person. I only hope God will give me the strength to carry-on when that time comes.

However, old age has it’s own problems. People start to deteriorate as they grow older and life can become tedious. Modern medication means that life expectancy is longer than ever before so we are experiencing conditions like dementia. Years ago when people died at a younger age this was unheard of.

If you ask me whether I am afraid of becoming really old and incapable then yes I am. I have custody of my 12 year old granddaughter and I fear something will happen to me before she is independent because she will go into the care system. I also fear dying in terrible pain as I know some people do when they are old and sick.

I suppose at the back of my mind I wonder what is out there after we die, is there life after death or do we just return to dust and our spirit dies along with our mortal body? It’s a sobering thought.

  7. old age is really a blessing indeed, I prayed to be. but others don’t wish to be old because it entails numerous challenges like settling family quarrel and wrong doings with just decisions, winking of the body, behaving like a little child, at times some even loss memory and finally being lonely and dejected by people. these reasons and many more I think are some of the reasons.

  8. It’s certain that the more we grow older the more we move nearer to death so this makes people to be afraid for getting old because we won’t be able to perform some tasks when we get older, we won’t be able to run around to work and earn more money rather live on your hard work rewards when you are old and this is the reason why the quote MAKE HAY WHILE THE SUN SHINE is warning us to work hard when we are Still agile enough as a youth.

  9. In life I still believe that old is a blessing. Something to be thankful and grateful. But that is when you live a healthy lifestyle and that even you are in that stage you are capable of taking care of yourself. Most people in old age are suffering from sickness that comes with age. And they don’t want to be a burden to the family. In my own opinion, we can only pray that we will be healthy and God won’t grant me sickness that can’t take. And if ever there will be then I’d rather go home peacefully and not let my family be in position to worry much more to suffer taking care of me. Still we should not be scared of old age because God has a better plan for everyone.

  10. Everyone still pray to live a long life and yes they still consider it a blessing but the fear of reaching close to the grave is another scary part on it own and most persons doesn’t want to abandon this youth pleasure and strength, they feel old age will restrict them of some fun as youth.

Those can include, buying a house, having a pension, getting married and having children, among others.

If they happen to reach what society deems a ripe old age without achieving any of the above, I reckon it can knock people’s confidence. And then of course, we live in an age where reality tv shows, magazines and social media platforms are image driven. You have to stay young and hot, otherwise you are written off as ugly and old as well as irrelevant. My guess is, nobody wants that for themselves. It’s the sad reality.

  14. It is because old age is the time when you have to be dependent on others for certain needs. It is the time of your life when you feel that you are no longer required by your kith and Kin and feel neglected. Above all, it is the time of your life when all diseases will start visiting you one by one. Naturally, the fear comes.
