As a spiritual endeavor, the true fast is inseparable from unceasing prayer and genuine repentance. Repentance without fasting is fruitless (Basil the Great, On Fasting 1, 3. PG 31, 168A), as fasting without merciful deeds is dead, especially nowadays when the unequal and unjust distribution of goods deprives entire nations of their daily bread.

My take on fasting it that it cleanses the stomach and the intestines. When there is no food in your body then that means you have flushed out everything.

Fasting is very important because it helps one to mortify the flesh which normally leads one to sin . It also brings us closer to God for by fasting we mortify our body for God’s sake .
One who mortifies his or her body through fasting hardly fall into the sins of the flesh .
